Curved timber bench, red stools and tiled service wall.

a café is built around one working object.

at equator coffees in culver city, it is the espresso machine — the source of the steam, the sound, the ritual.

Kellie Patry Hospitality Design started there and worked outward: the counter, the line, the palette, the room.

every coffee shop we design begins the same way. find the working center. let everything else answer to it.

01 — start with the working center

the espresso machine is the engine.

in a café, the counter is where the work and the guest meet, so it carries the idea first. at equator, the machine sits at the heart of the counter as the source of the steam. the making of coffee becomes the performance.

02 — give the idea a line

coffee grows along the equator. an imaginary line drawn around the earth.

we gave that line a form. the counter takes the nostalgic shape of a deco train, an extension of the metro platform outside at ivy station. coast lines, fault lines, freeways, train lines, waves, the horizon. the line repeats until the room reads as one idea.

03 — let materials carry the story

the walls don’t explain the idea. the materials hold it.

equator red is the foreground: bold, made to draw the eye. wave-pattern tile is the backdrop, the coastline and the steam. wood is the neutral pier, toned to the colorways, grounding the rest. the tropics arrive as strong light and warmth, not decoration.

every space has a working center. let's find yours.
